Jellyfish versus Gemstone Lights.

Neither of these is our premium system, so there is no version of this page that helps us. It exists because people ask, and because an answer from somebody with nothing to gain is worth more than an answer from either manufacturer.

We fit both, so this is not a pitch.

  • Compared on what shows

Diode spacing, diffuser and how the channel is fixed. The things you can actually see.

  • The install is the variable

The same hardware fitted badly fails long before the cheaper one fitted properly.

  • Weaknesses named

Where one is genuinely worse we write it down here and say it again at the quote.

An Omaha two-story with the left half of the elevation in red and the right half in blue
A long Omaha ranch at dusk in red, white and blue along a curved drive
A deep red wash across the gable and eaves of an Omaha home with a car in the driveway lit red

The verdict

Neither of these is our premium system, so we have no dog in this fight. Jellyfish is usually the cheaper install and easier to find a dealer for. Gemstone usually has the better channel and the better white. If you are choosing between just these two, the deciding factor is which local installer you trust.

Both columns are our own read as installers in this market. Neither manufacturer has given us a datasheet, and we have not asked either of them to review this page.

What we do not know about this one.

Every comparison page you will read on this subject is written with gaps in it. Ours has them listed, because a page that appears to know everything about a competitor is a page that has filled the gaps with plausible sentences.

  • Gemstone's datasheet, same as on their own comparison page.
  • Which of the two your local installer actually does well, which on this particular comparison matters more than either datasheet would.

What we hand over, on two houses.

Neither of these is a comparison. Everything else here is a claim about hardware, and a claim is worth less than a finished roofline.

An Omaha two-story in orange and violet with a stone column washed amber for Halloween
Orange and violet through October, set from the app and scheduled to switch itself back.
A stucco and stone prairie-style Omaha home at twilight with warm white under the eaves
Civil twilight, which is the twenty minutes this product looks best.

Where each of these actually wins.

On this comparison, the installer matters more than the box.

  • Ask for a daylight photo of a finished job

Anybody can make a roofline look good at night. The test is whether you can pick the channel out in daylight on a house they finished last year.

  • Ask who is on the ladder

Whether the people who quote it are the people who fit it. Almost every failure in this trade is workmanship, so this question is the one that predicts year four.

  • Ask when the sealant goes on

At the moment the screw is driven, or in one pass at the end of the day. Only one of those keeps water out of a fascia board.

  • Ask how the channel is fixed

Screwed into the fascia, or stuck on with adhesive. One of those is still straight in year eight.

  • Ask what happens at handover

Whether somebody walks the scenes with you, or hands you an app and drives off.

Ask us the same five. We would rather be judged on them than on which brand is in our van.

We will tell you which of the two to buy.

Free, on the phone, with no version of the answer that benefits us. We do not lead with either of these, so there is no version of this answer that puts money in our pocket.
